Position Overview:
This position may be based in either Calgary, Alberta (Canada) or Dallas, Texas.
The Canadian Oil and Gas Division's Shale team is looking for a senior level Production Technologist with extensive and specialized skills in Rate Transient (RTA) and Pressure Transient (PTA) Analysis. This experience should be underscored by well testing in tight sand and shale reservoirs. The team is a dynamic group of technical specialists focusing on developing the next generation of reservoir-specific solutions for our North Eastern British Columbia, Dilly Creek and Cordova shale gas plays.
The successful candidate will be a member of a senior multi-discipline team who will employ leading-edge well testing techniques to analyze production data to supplement our ability to evaluate and recommend the best reservoir solutions and opportunities to create significant improvements in recovery efficiency, well productivity, and development cost. Key targets for innovative development include gas shale, stacked tight gas sand and naturally fractured reservoir which benefit from application of innovative drilling and completion technology within the context of advanced reservoir and geosciences exploitation understanding.
Reporting to the Manager, Exploitation & Development, the successful candidate will apply their well testing and production technology expertise to provide the multi-discipline team with pressure transient and advanced decline rate transient analysis to complement and improve our reservoir characterization and well productivity results. Nexen has already established a strong land position and development plans are underway as part of a robust strategic plan for the area.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work with integrated reservoir management services providers to design and complete analysis of various well tests (multi/single point flow & buildup, injection & fall off, DST, perforation inflow);
- Determine near well-bore reservoir parameters (permeability, skin, fracture parameters);
- Provide analysis to Exploitation & Development Reservoir Engineering to estimate the reservoir pressure, and distances to reservoir boundaries and/or heterogeneities;
- Conduct analysis to predict the deliverability potential at various flowing conditions;
- Provide data analysis support to Exploitation & Development Reservoir Engineering to recommend potential stimulation (for damaged wells) or optimization candidates (utilizing tubing performance curves and liquid lift calculations);
- Provide accurate RTA calculations for determination of in-place volumes;
- Assist with reservoir characterization modeling (permeability, skin, fracture half-length);
- Provide analysis to diagnose changing skin or permeability conditions;
- Monitor well performance;
- Provide analysis to support determination of optimal well spacing and recoveries from infill drilling;
- Provide drainage area calculations for regulatory down-spacing applications;
- Support Exploitation & Development Reservoir Engineering to performance reserve evaluations using volumetric/analogy, material balance and production history modeling methods. Assist with generation of forecast data to be used for calculating project economics.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Reservoir or Petroleum Engineering Technology;
- Professional standing with ASET - Certified Engineering Technologist (CET);
- Minimum of 10 years of related experience with advanced well testing experience related to tight sands and shale gas reservoirs;
- Comprehensive experience in volumetric, material balance, production data analysis;
- Expert level standing in RTA and PTA analysis;
- Well organized and a self-starter;
- Comfort working with multi-disciplinary teams;
- Ability to analyze data and develop conclusions;
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
