Position Overview:
The Canadian Oil and Gas Division\\\‘s Shale team is looking for a senior level geophysicist with broad seismic interpretation and specialized micro-seismic interpretation skills, underscored with experience in tight sand and shale reservoirs. The team is a dynamic group of technical specialists focusing on developing the next generation of reservoir-specific solutions for our North Eastern British Columbia, Dilly Creek and Cordova Shale Gas plays.

The successful candidate will be a member of a senior multi-discipline team who will employ leading-edge well construction and stimulation technologies to evaluate and recommend the best engineering and geoscience solutions and opportunities to create significant improvements in recovery efficiency, well productivity, and development cost. Key targets for innovative development include gas shale, stacked tight gas sand and naturally fractured reservoir, which benefit from the application of innovative drilling and completion technology within the context of advanced geosciences interpretation and past exploitation understanding.

Reporting to the Manager, Shale E&D, the successful candidate will apply their geophysical expertise to provide the multi-discipline team with solutions to improve the stimulation and enhance well productivity and development cost. The goal is to optimize the geometry of the fracture and stimulation design to optimize well production and also to understand reservoir drainage to plan infill drilling patterns as development progresses. Nexen has already established a strong land position and development plans are underway as part of a robust strategic plan for the area.

Job Duties/Responsibilities: – Apply micro-seismic interpretation to increase the understanding of the induced fracture geometry and to better understand the created fracture geometry for various completion designs; – Contribute expertise in 2D and 3D interpretation of Nexen\\\‘s Shale gas plays, LiDAR and HRAM (high resolution aero magnetic) data, seismic inversion of 3D for rock properties and other technologies along, with seismic processing QC including multiple attenuation, resolution enhancement and depth imaging; – Apply geophysical techniques in coordination with geological expertise to analyze how structural geology (by the means of basement structure influence, differential shortening effect, etc.) as well as sequence stratigraphy and depositional history yield stress field variations both laterally and with depth; – Recommend advanced processing algorithms and transmission techniques to facilitate data processing to improve determination of micro-seismic hypo-central locations; – Make recommendations to integrate mapped induced micro-seismic activity, well-bore images and sonic logs to bring additional information to help understand the nature of the reservoir and the hydraulic treatment behavior; – Based on micro-seismic monitoring of hydraulic fracture treatments, participate with the shale gas development design team to recommend changes in fracture design as well as changes in perforation strategy and re-stimulation designs to maximize the reservoir volume effectively contacted by the stimulation treatment; – Recommend techniques for detecting potential sub-seismic scale structural geo-hazards; – In addition to the core geophysical responsibilities, this individual is responsible for attending symposia and conferences to keep current with geophysical developments. In addition, this individual will provide mentorship, guidance and training as required.

Education/Experience: – B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Geophysics or equivalent education; – Professional standing with APEGGA and/or SPE, CSUG; – Minimum of 10 years of related experience with advanced seismic technology related to tight sands and shale gas reservoirs; – Direct experience resolving micro-seismic interpretations and applications in shale gas and unconventional gas fields such as the Barnett, Lafayette, Marcellus and emerging Horne River basin fields; – Experience in integrating diverse geophysical and geological data (e.g. 2D and 3D seismic, potential fields, surface geology, wells); – Experience in seismic modeling and inversion would be an asset; – Application of sound geological and geophysical principles and concepts; – Good critical thinking skills, an inquisitive mind, and the ability to work with leading edge technology.
